STEP / MAT

STEP

STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) Mathematics is a well-established mathematics examination that tests candidates on their ability to answer undergraduate-style math questions.

STEP is used by the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick. If other universities require STEP as part of their offer, they will ask you to sit for specific papers.

There are three STEP papers and each paper is three hours long. The content is based on A levels Mathematics and Further Mathematics, but the style is focused on applying knowledge in unfamiliar situations.

MAT

The Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT) is administered by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, in partnership with the University of Oxford.

Students applying to the University of Oxford’s undergraduate degree courses in Mathematics, Computer Science and related fields need to take the MAT. Imperial College London uses the MAT for all undergraduate Mathematics course applicants.

The MAT is suitable for all students, including those who haven’t taken up Further Mathematics A-Level.
